The Clinical Education Matrix: A Roadmap for NPD Practice

Nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners balance a wide range of responsibilities across healthcare and academic settings, often serving as educators, leaders, change agents, and subject matter experts. As regulatory, accreditation, and competency requirements continue to evolve, staying current and ensuring compliance can be a significant challenge. To support NPD practitioners in this work, the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) offers a variety of valuable resources, including the Clinical Education Matrix (CEM).

Maintained by the ANPD Implementation Committee, the CEM has become a well-established resource for navigating accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and competency expectations. Each year, committee members dedicate significant time to reviewing and updating the matrix to reflect changes from regulatory and accrediting bodies, ensuring NPD practitioners have access to current and relevant information. As chair of the Implementation Committee, I have had the privilege of working with our committee twice to review and update the CEM. I have learned a great deal from reviewing the document and collaborating with my colleagues, serving in a variety of NPD roles all over the country.

The spreadsheet-based matrix is organized into user-friendly tabs that allow practitioners to quickly locate requirements and standards from multiple organizations, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), Det Norske Veritas Healthcare (DNV) (including primary and comprehensive stroke certifications), The Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), ambulatory setting considerations, and more. Each section provides required education and competency guidance, identifies the appropriate learner audience, references applicable standards and identifying numbers, and includes filterable columns that allow users to search by topic, standard, audience, and other criteria.

The CEM serves as an essential resource for both compliance and education planning. It supports accreditation readiness, helps align educational programs with regulatory expectations, assists with competency validation processes, and ultimately promotes consistent, high-quality patient care. Having access to this information in a centralized, searchable format can significantly reduce the time required to locate and interpret requirements from multiple organizations.

Although the CEM is intended as a reference guide and should not be considered an official regulatory document, it has become an invaluable resource in my own practice. I frequently use it as a starting point when developing educational programs, reviewing competency requirements, preparing for surveys and accreditation activities, and validating that educational initiatives align with current regulatory standards. Instead of searching through multiple websites, manuals, and regulatory documents, I can quickly identify relevant standards and then reference the original source for additional details, as needed. Knowing that the resource has been developed and maintained by fellow NPD practitioners makes it especially meaningful, as it reflects the real-world challenges we face in our roles. The CEM not only saves time and improves efficiency but also provides confidence that educational and competency initiatives are aligned with current expectations, allowing me to focus more on supporting learners and improving patient outcomes.

I have shared this resource with my colleagues and promote it when networking with fellow NPD practitioners. I frequently navigate to the ANPD website when I am looking to make my work more efficient and effective, and the CEM has made a significant impact on my daily work.

The Clinical Education Matrix can be found on the ANPD website by first selecting the “Resources” tab and navigating to the “For NPD Practitioners” link.
