Mosby's Preceptor Course, a collaborative effort of the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) and Elsevier/MC Strategies, is a blended learning experience with 15 online lessons that lay the foundation for effectively performing the role of preceptor. Each lesson is complemented with at least one offline preceptor activity that is completed independently and is the basis for sharing and discussion with the educator or in a facilitated group of preceptors.
Topics addressed in the course:
- The preceptor role
- Teaching and learning
- Critical thinking
- Precepting in action
- Supporting the preceptee
Common themes are threaded across all lessons including assessment, competency development, critical thinking, conflict management, performance evaluation, feedback, and self care.
The online lessons are instructionally designed with intermittent knowledge checks such as matching, case study, and multiple choice activities. Multimedia and Pearls of Wisdom enhance the learning experience, and preceptor tools in the Resource section support the preceptor role. Offline activities offer opportunities to apply learning, reflect on aspects of the preceptor role, and identify resources available in the preceptor's organization. One-on-one or group interactions provide a safe environment to share activity outcomes, learn from colleagues, and receive feedback. Online and offline activities award continuing education credit.
