2013: ANPD Welcomes First Director of Nursing Professional Development 


Mary Harper, PhD, RN-BC is the first Director of Nursing Professional Development (NPD) for the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD). She obtained her master’s degree in nursing administration from the University of Florida and her PhD in nursing from the University of Central Florida. She was a Director on the Board of Directors of ANPD from 2007 – 2011 and was President-elect from 2012 – 2013. She resigned from the Board to take the position of Director of NPD.

Mary has 24 years’ experience in NPD that includes unit-based, system-based, and national level professional development. She served as the Director of Education in a three-hospital system. Mary was a section editor for the 4th edition of the Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development, editorial director for the 5th edition, co-editor of Leadership in Nursing Professional Development: An Organizational and System Focus and co-editor of Legal Aspects of Nursing Professional Development Practice. She has participated in four national NPD research studies as either a principal investigator or co-investigator. She has published 28 articles in 6 different peer-reviewed journals and presented at multiple national and international conferences.

Mary is a member of the Florida Action Coalition, serving on the state steering committee. She served on the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. She represents ANPD as an NPD/continuing education expert on the National Collaborative for Improving the Clinical Learning Environment (NCICLE) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Foundation’s National Coalition on Hospital Preparation for Safe Use of Complex Healthcare Technology.
