President's Message

An Important Message from the ANPD President

By Patsy Maloney, EdD, RN, NPD-BC, CEN, NEA-BC

Healthcare providers worldwide are engaged in emergency operations related to the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. While Washington state and the Puget Sound region, that I call home, have been harder hit than other states and regions over the last couple of weeks, we can anticipate similar surges of COVID-19 cases throughout the United States. With this ever-changing, unprecedented situation, we NPD practitioners are needed in our communities.  We are the experts in prioritizing and providing the education and training necessary for front-line healthcare providers to safely and efficiently care for the victims of this new virus. Our leadership and optimistic professional presence are needed now more than ever.

We, the ANPD Board of Directors and staff, have been monitoring the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines, national and organizational travel restrictions, public gathering restrictions and other pertinent data in order to make wise decisions for the health and well-being of our members and our association.  On Monday, we held an emergency meeting to discuss the status of the upcoming Aspire …to Envision Annual Convention scheduled April 28 – May 1 in Chicago and made the prudent but difficult decision to cancel this year’s convention.

We are all saddened and disappointed at the necessary cancellation of our annual opportunity to connect, share, and learn together, but remain committed to serve your interests. Your BOD, your NPD Practice Team, the Content Planning Committee, and the ANPD staff are already working to mitigate the negative impacts of this cancellation and to plan for alternative opportunities to connect virtually for learning and camaraderie.

I want to thank you for the work you are doing to support our front-line staff. Washington State NPD practitioners are working very long days at least 6 days a week and I know many of you are doing likewise. Please take care of yourselves. This is not a sprint. It’s a marathon and marathons do have an end.

Take care of yourselves,
