ANCC Update - CNE vs. NCPD

By Jillian Russell, MSN, RN, NPD-BC

Appropriate acronym and terminology use are essential in our practice environment. For example, as NPD practitioners, we know that 1 CEU is not the same as 1.0 contact hour. What about continuing nursing education (CNE) vs. nursing continuing professional development (NCPD)?

In the fall of 2019, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) announced revised accreditation criteria. Moving forward, ANCC is using the term NCPD instead of CNE. “Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) and contact hours may also be used interchangeably. The only statement that must reflect the new name change is the accredited provider/approver statement” (ANCC, 2019, p. 5).

Accreditation statement revisions should be made no later than January 1, 2021. Approved NCPD providers should direct questions to their accredited approver and accredited providers should contact ANCC with questions about revised criteria.
